KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Alma College women's soccer team opened up conference play on Wednesday, September 27th after the original game was postponed a day due to weather conditions. The Scots faced off against the Hornets of Kalamazoo College to kick off conference play, ultimately falling by a final score of 5-1.
Kalamazoo opened up the scoring for the game as they found the back of the net from the right side just over ten minutes into play. Kalamazoo would then tack on another just over four minutes later to extend their lead to 2-0 in the first half. Alma would find their offensive presence and create scoring chances following the second Hornet's goal, knocking on the doorstep. Ala. Would then be awarded a corner kick that they would use to capitalize on their offensive presence as Briana Scillion took the corner kick and placed it nicely right in the box. Paige Kohler would find a lane and make contact in their air for a header that crossed the goal line and cut the deficit to one for the Scots. Kalamazoo increased their lead to two goals again around the 33-minute mark in the first quarter before adding another before the half ended. The Scots went into halftime trailing 4-1.
The second half was relatively quiet as both teams saw chances but nothing saw the back of the net until the final nine minutes as Kalamazoo snuck one past, making the score 5-1. Alma pushed hard in the second half though they couldn't find the back of the net and dropping the first conference game of the season.
Kohler led the Scots with three shots in the game and two on net. Allison Bush made 5 saves for the game.
Alma will continue conference play as they will play host to Calvin University who is currently ranked #21 in the country. Game time is set for 11:00 AM on Saturday, September 30th as part of the 2023 Homecoming celebration.
