#17/20 Football Rolls to Big Halftime Lead in W Over Wittenberg

Springfield, OH – Alma College Football continued their 2023 season on Saturday at Wittenberg University. The Scots jumped out to a huge halftime lead, and continued to score in the second half, on a day where the Alma offense couldn't be stopped. The Scots entered the game ranked at 17th (AFCA) and 20th(D3Football.com) in DIII based on a pair of polls, and are set to be ranked higher next week, after leaving Springfield with a convincing 48-28 victory.

Alma ended Wittenberg's opening drive of the game with an interception from Odin Soffredine, his 3rd of the season. The Scots took the ball straight down the field, and got on the scoreboard first, courtesy of a 7-yard pass from Carter St. John to Zach Poff. At 7-0, the Tigers next drive resulted in a missed field goal. Once again Alma converted, taking the ball 80 yards in 6 plays, scoring on a 13-yard scamper by St. John. After one quarter, the Scots led 14-0.

The Scots tacked on another 3 points from the right foot of Josh Hernandez. The 18-yard field goal brought the score to 17-0. Alma held that lead until the 9:37 mark of quarter two, when Wittenberg responded with a scoring drive, aided by a Scots penalty that kept it alive. At 17-7, the Scots went 59 yards in 6 plays to score again, capping it off with a 4-yard Gage Krueger screen pass for the TD. Alma followed that up with a 64-yard big play from St. John to Devon Frenchko. With just 46 seconds left, it didn't appear that Alma would get the ball back, but another interception from Drew Humm gave the Scots the ball in Tigers territory. The visitors converted on a 33 yarder as time expired, 34-7 was the Scots lead at half.

To open the second half, Alma drove down the field, 92 yards in 14 plays, capped by a Davin Reif 1 yard touchdown run. At 41-7, Wittenberg responded with 2 straight touchdowns, to bring things to 41-21. The Scots scored once more, Poff again from 19 yards out to cap the Alma scoring. Wittenberg grabbed one more touchdown with just under 5 minutes to play, and the final score rested at 48-28.

Carter St. John (22-25, 4 TD, INT) was clinical throwing a career high 323 passing yards, adding 53 rushing yards and a score on the ground. Eddie Williams was the Scots' leading rusher, with 92 yards on 20 carries. Devon Frenchko led the receivers for Alma, with 5 catches for 109 yards and a touchdown.
