Men's Soccer Completes Miraculous Comeback Over Illinois Tech

Chicago, IL – Alma College Soccer hit the road to take on Illinois Tech on Saturday. The Scots were victorious in a 5-4 instant classic. It was a marquee day for Alma's offense, as it had been 8 years since the Scots scored 5 or more goals in a single match.

The first 20 minutes of the game went by scoreless, with forwards and defenders feeling each other out. At 20:12, Tech jumped out a lead, which would last approximately 18 seconds. At 20:30, the Scots answered straight away, with Tatenda Mukudu's 2nd goal of 2023. Alma went on to take the lead off the foot of Ethan Swartzentruber at 39:45, his 4th mark of the campaign. At halftime, the score was 2-1 in favor of the good guys.

The Scarlet Hawks had a different plan for the second half, and quickly turned things around on Alma. The hosts scored at 55:24 to level things, and then again just 20 seconds later to take the lead. A third straight goal at 69:00 moved the score to 4-2, and things looked to be out of reach. The Scots won the mental battle however, and what ensued will surely be a top candidate for comeback of the year.

It started with Antonio Avila knocking in a bad clearing attempt from Tech at 72:06 to bring the Scots within one. Just 2 minutes later, Christian Sweis scored off of a Gerrit Barth assist to level the game. Swartzentruber then scored the go-ahead goal at 84:18 to cap the miraculous comeback.

Landon Soule got his first career start in net, and stopped 6 of 10 shots on target that he faced.

Alma improves to 2-3-2, and looks forward to a Saturday home matchup with Anderson, followed by Senior Day on Sunday against Franklin College.
