Box Score ANGOLA, Ind. – The Alma College men's basketball team took to the court in Indiana against No. 22 Trine University on Saturday, February 4th. The men fell in the final minutes to the Thunder by a final score of 67-59.
Trine got on the board first with a basket from beyond the arc before Alma would respond and quickly take a one-possession lead five minutes into gameplay. Both teams traded the lead for several minutes before Alma would hold a two-possession lead. Trine would battle back and tie it before taking a several possession lead of their own with five minutes remaining in the half. The Scots would go on an 8-3 scoring run to end the half knotted at 28, thanks to four of the eight points coming from Connor Riley.
Both teams picked up where they left off in the second, trading the lead early before the Scots would put together a 11-3 run to take an eight-point lead three minutes into the half. Alma was able to contain the top 25 team for a considerable amount of time before the Thunder would eventually tie the game with just over ten minutes remaining in the game. The Scots found themselves losing grip of the Thunder slowly before Nate Deyman hit a big three to bring the game to one-possession. Alma would hang around a tight matchup before time would become their enemy forcing them to send the Thunder to the line. Trine would convert on their attempts and the Scots would drop the matchup to the nationally-ranked Thunder.
Riley was the Sots leading scorer with 17 points and Deyman recorded 12 points on shooting 4-5 from deep. Colton Mesiter led the team with nine rebounds and recorded ten points of his own. Riley had a team-high six assists and Landen Moore-Pierce added four more. Alma recorded 26 points in the paint, six more than their opponent in a game that saw seven lead changes.
Alma will now be back at home for a Wednesday night matchup against No. 14 ranked Calvin University. Tipoff will be at 7:30 PM in Art Smith Arena.
