Albion, MI – Alma College Football was on the road on Saturday to close out the regular season at Albion College. The Scots secured their second straight perfect season, and second straight outright MIAA Championship in blowout fashion, winning 50-14. This is the first time that Alma has had back to back perfect seasons, or back to back outright conference titles, in 55 years.
The game opened with a bang. Alma forced a 3 and out, before capping off a 7 play, 66-yard drive with an
Eddie Williams 1 yard TD. Another 3-and-out, and the Scots were in the endzone, this time courtesy of a
Devon Frenchko 56-yard pass. The Scots struck again before the first quarter ended, with
Carter St. John scoring from 3 yards out on a pass fake.
Albion scored on a big play late in the second, and the Scots responded with a TD drive of their own. The Scots poured it on as the quarter went on, scoring on two more big plays to Frenchko to push the lead out to 43-7. At half, the lead sat at 36.
Alma scored on the opening drive of the third quarter, with
Jordan Williams scoring from 24 yards out to increase the lead at 50-7. Albion scored once more in the third, but the score stayed at 50-14, which saw Alma through to an outright championship.
Carter St. John was 13-17 through the air, for 353 yards and 3 touchdowns. His season total of 33 is good for a new Scots record, breaking the 31 TD mark from Josh Brehm in 2006.
Eddie Williams exploded for 114 yards and 2 TD on the ground.
Devon Frenchko was the top receiver in the game, and possibly in the country on Saturday. The senior hauled in a whopping 225 yards and 3 touchdowns on just 4 receptions. The 225 yards is the 3rd most in a single game all time for Alma.
Jack Kretzschmar recorded a team high 10 tackles. The Scots racked up 4 sacks in the win, as well as an interception from Kretzschmar.
Alma finishes the regular season at 10-0, and awaits the NCAA Selection Show tomorrow at 5 P.M. to see who, and where, they will be playing in the Division III Playoffs.
