#14/17 Football Celebrates Seniors With Win Over Olivet

Alma, MI – Alma College Football hosted The University of Olivet on Saturday. Alma celebrated Senior Day and Community Day with a hard fought 41-20 victory.

The game opened in a way that hadn't yet been seen in 2023, with Alma College trailing for the first time all season. The Comets won the toss, and took the ball, marching 65 yards in 14 plays and taking a whopping 7:14 off the clock on a scoring drive to put Alma down 7-0. Things compounded when the Scots opening drive was ended via an interception in the endzone. Alma needed 2 plays and 26 seconds to get on the board at 7-6 coming from a 35 yard touchdown pass from Carter St. John to Devon Frenchko.

Alma's score more than doubled to 13-6 just minutes later, when Jerome Roberson took a bobbled handoff out of the Olivet running back's hands, and walked in to the endzone with it for a scoop-and-score. The Scots poured it on as they used a 7 play, 65 yard, drive to score, capped by a Zach Poff screen pass going in from 4 yards out.

The Comets had a shot at the scoreboard, but had their field goal blocked to open the 2nd quarter. A pair of punts later, Alma scored again, and again it was Poff, from 20 yards out. At halftime, the score was 26-7.

The teams traded 12 play, 71 yard scoring drives out of the break. John Allen punched in a 9 yard rushing score, followed by the Comet drive, plus another scoring drive. Just when it looked like the Comets were getting back into things, the Scots defense stepped up again. A downed punt on the 1 saw Alma's Gage Nelson bring down the running back in his own endzone for a safety to make it 34-20. The cherry on top was a Carter St. John rushing touchdown.

41-20. Final.

Carter St. John was 19-28 for 196 yards and 3 touchdowns, along with a score on the ground. Jordan Williams was the leading rusher, with 16 carries for 119 yards on the ground. Zach Poff caught 9 passes for 78 yard sand 2 scores.

Odin Soffredine recorded 13 tackles in the win. 6 different players were involved in Alma's 5 sacks.

The Scots move to 8-0, 4-0 in MIAA play, and head to Adrian next week.
