Alma, MI – The Alma College Volleyball team hosted Hope College on Tuesday night in MIAA conference play, honoring their seniors before the game. Alma was outmatched by the team that currently sits at #3 in Division III based on the latest AVCA Coaches Poll. Alma was defeated in straight sets 25-12, 25-17, and 25-16.
The Flying Dutch scored the first 9 points of the opening set, with Alma needing a timeout to get on the board. The Scots trailed big, but did find a solid run in the middle of the set to pull the gap back down, before Hope pulled away. Alma played much closer in the second set, with the visitors leading by as much as 7, but not getting away from the Scots. In the end, Alma dropped the sets after a 6-1 run to end the set. Alma limited Hope to their lowest offensive output of the game in the third set, but the visitors opened up a fairly large gap early on. Alma wasn't able to overcome it, and dropped the set and the game.
Offense was very hard to come by for Alma against a Hope side that prides itself on being one of the best defensive squads in Division III. The team landed 15 kills, and
Callie Smith led the Scots with 5.
Lexi Dykstra assisted on 13 of those 15.
Kolbey Boyd registered 12 digs in the loss.
The Scots drop to 13-11, 2-5 in MIAA play, and have one final tune-up before a crucial win-and-in contest on the road at Trine next week.
