ALMA, Mich. – The Alma College women's soccer team hosted The University of Olivet on a cold and windy Saturday afternoon on October, 14th, at Scotland Yard. The Scots came away victorious with a 3-0 win over the Comets for their first win in conference this season.
Alma applied offensive pressure early in the game and sustained it throughout most of the game. The Scots racked up the shots early as they were putting the ball on or towards the net looking to break through an take a lead. Alma was awarded a penalty kick after a foul in the box was called and Paige Kohler lined up one on one with the goalkeeper. Kohler shot in low and towards the left-center to put the Scots up 1-0 with 11 minutes left to play in the first half. Just over two minutes later, Briana Scillion took a corner kick and passed the ball to Lily Stephan where then Stephan dribbled into the box and sent a shot towards the net that bounced off of an Olivet player and into the back of the net. Alma went up 2-0 with just over nine minutes left in the quarter and would ultimately end the half up the same.
Opening the second half, Alma found themselves defending a corner kick in which they did and sent the ball towards the sidelines. After throwing it in Alma found Scillion racing down the left side of the field untouched, where she was able to send a feed into the box that found Kohler moving swiftly down the field, and she was able to one-touch it past the keeper and give Alma their third of the game. Kohler's second goal would be the end of the scoring for the contest as both teams would battle for the rest of regulation, but the defenses would hold it down.
Stephan led the Scots with eight shots in the contest, six of which were on the goal. Kohler had four shots, three on net in the contest. Scillion had two assists in the game as Allison Bush made four saves in the shutout win for the senior on the program's Senior Day.
Alma will continue along with their conference action as they will travel to Trine University in Indiana on October 18th. The game is set to begin at 7:15PM.
