Holland, MI – Alma College Football came out of the bye week and was on the road to take on Hope College on Saturday. The Scots were victorious over a tough Flying Dutchmen squad 35-17.
The game got off to a hot start. The opening drive lasted just 2 plays, and was ended by an Alma interception. The Scots then lost the ball on downs, before getting it back 3 plays later on another pick. This time Alma cashed in on a very short field, 4 yards to be exact.
Nate Webb pulled in a 2 yard pass from
Davin Reif to put Alma up 7-0. The teams traded punts, and Hope found traction next, using a 12-play drive to go 80 yards and punch it in to tie things at 7-7.
What came next was

Zach Poff things. The freshman took the ensuing kickoff 94 yards to the house, and put the Scots right back on top 14-7 with zeroes on the first quarter clock. The entirety of the 2
ndquarter was eaten up by 4 well sustained drives. The teams traded punts, before Hope connected on a 32-yard field goal to cut the lead to 14-10. Alma took the next drive all the way down inside the home team's 20-yard line, but missed a field goal as time expired. At half, the score was 14-10.
Out of the break, the Scots took firm hold of the game. The offense drove 70 yards down the field in 2:41, capped by a
Jordan Williams touchdown from 7-yards out. The Scots forced a Hope punt on the next drive, and Alma went right back down the field, using just 2 plays to go 61 yards with
Carter St. John scoring from 18 yards out on the ground.
Each team lost a possession on downs, before Alma broke out the trick play. A toss from St. John to
Kahleel Brown saw the running back huck a pass down the sideline to a wide-open
Nate Webb who walked into the endzone completing a 34 yard scoring play.
Hope scored on the ensuing possession, but no further points were put up by either team, and the Scots walked out winners, 35-17.
Carter St. John was the leader through the air, completing 14 of 24 for 149 yards.
Eddie Williams put the rushing game on his back and carried it, rushing 19 times for 121 yards. The sophomore also led Alma receivers with 3 catches for 52 yards.
Defensively, Eli Jackson led with 8 total tackles.
Jerome Roberson however was a force. The senior registered 2.5 tackles for loss, also picking up 2 sacks. The interceptions came courtesy of
Odin Soffredine and
Jack Kretzschmar.
The Scots move to 6-0 and 2-0 in MIAA play. Alma will be back at home hosting Kalamazoo College for the Alma College CARES Game.
