ANGOLA, Ind. – The Alma College men's wrestling team traveled to Indiana on Thursday, January 19, for an MIAA matchup against Trine University. Alma took several matches from the Thunder tightening the score, though Trine came away with a 32-18 win over the Scots.
In the 165 division, Calvin Huggler faced off against Ethan Nash. Huggler was victorious by fall (3:14) and gave Alma their first team points of the night. Huggler's win added six points to the Scots and brought the team score to 26-6.
Following the 165 bout, Eddie Williams took the mat in the 174 division facing off against John Browning. Williams fought hard until the end of all three periods and was awarded a victory by decision (7-4). Willams win gave Alma another three points to the team score, making it 26-9.
Will Vernier, who wrestled in the 184 weight class, competed against Andrew Williamson in a tight fought match. Vernier showed determination and grit in. a close match that he was able to pull out a win by decision (6-5). Verniers victory added another three to Alma's total, tightening the match to 26-12.
Wrestling in the final team match of the night, Joseph Maier took the mat against Andrew Captain in the 285 match. Maier showed signs of his early season success again and was able to secure a win by fall (5:47) over Captain to add six more on to the Alma total.
Both teams had one wrestler compete in an exhibition match. Freshman Matthew Johnson faced off against Kyler Bills in another 285 contest. Johnson was awarded a victory by decision (5-2) over Bills for his second consecutive exhibition victory. Johnson was also victorious against Blake Daniels of Adrian College, this win coming by fall in the second period last week.
Alma will now host numerous other teams this weekend at their Alma College Open on Saturday, January 21st. Matches are set to begin at 9 a.m. Tickets are available online at almascots.com/information/tickets.
