Box Score ALMA, Mich. – The Alma College men's basketball team played host to Trine University, who currently sits at 16 in the national polls. The Scots battled throughout the night though Trine left Art Smith Arena with an 80-60 win over the Scots.
Alma started the game winning the tip and knocking down a three from Nate Deyman. Trine then took control of the next seven minutes by going on a 17-3 run to build a lead over Alma. With eight minutes remaining in the first half, Trine grew their lead to 17 but the Scots would not back down. The Scots would knock down back-to-back threes and a Ty Lotterman layup to lessen the gap. Alma's offense would get the ball moving around in the final two minutes of the half by having four different players record baskets including a buzzer-beater by Peyton Bush, to go into halftime trailing 36-28.
The second half started with each team trading baskets before the Scots would knock down a layup and two three pointers to bring them within six. Alma would struggle to keep the game within reach following that momentum as Trine would extend their lead back to double digits. The Scots encountered a Trine team who shot near 66% in the second half, proving why they are a top team in the nation. The Thunder would use their offensive presence to grab a win over Alma, 80-60.
Connor Riley recorded 15 points and eight rebounds in the contest to lead the Scots in both categories. Tyshaun Walker, Josh Elliott and Deyman each scored eight to follow behind Riley. Walker also dished the ball for three assists which led the team. Alma caused the Thunder to turn the ball over 16 times throughout the game, and the Scots bench outscored the Thunder bench, 22-16.
Men's basketball will be back in action on Saturday, January 21st, when they take on the Dutchmen of Hope College. Tipoff for the men's game will be at 5:15 at the Devos Fieldhouse.
