Alma battles the elements at Siena Heights

ADRIAN, Mich. -- The Alma College track and field teams took part in the Don Kleinow Memorial Invitational at Siena Heights University on Thursday (Apr. 14). The men were 12th in the team standings while the women took fifth on a cold and windy evening.

Bailey Hoffman broke her own school record in the women's hammer throw event, winning the event with a massive toss of 50.47 meters and bettering her old mark by over three meters and ranking her 16th in NCAA Division III.

Andrea Taghon competed in both the 100-meter and 400-meter hurdles, finishing seventh in the longer race with a time of 1:19.42, and eighth in the 100-meter hurdle race in 17.42 seconds.

In the women's 200 and 400-meter dashes, Ericka Bigham took fourth in the 200-meter race in 26.70 seconds and won the 400-meter dash in 58.98 seconds. Cornelia Gotaas competed in both the 1500 and 800-meter races, taking third in the 1500 with a time of 5:15.56, and sixth in the 800 in 2:34.68.

The women's 5000-meter race saw Caleigh Winters finish in eighth place with a time of 19:50.05.

On the men's side, Joey Gonzales competed in both the long jump and triple jump events. He finished third in the triple jump with a mark of 12.13 meters, while taking fourth in the long jump in 6.54 meters.

Sean Pauley was fourth in the 5000-meter race with a time of 16:27.18, while the men's 4x100-meter relay team of Anthony Spears, Kenneth Williams, Landon Jennings, and Chandler Holloway took fifth in 44.42 seconds.

From Head Coach Matt Chovanec:

"It seems like it's been the same story every week this outdoor season. We're battling the outdoor elements as much as the field. This week it was high winds. However, all this weather has allowed us to learn how to adjust our competition plans, deal with adversity in certain moments, and showed us that if we just compete against the field, our performances will take care of themselves. It was another great effort by our team. We'll enjoy the next week off to celebrate the graduation of our seniors as well as take care of some nagging injuries and hope that we can finally hit some great weather in a couple of weeks at our next meet. We're definitely in a good spot right now."

Up next:

With Alma College commencement next weekend (Apr. 23), the Scots will be back in action at Davenport University beginning on Friday (Apr. 29). Stay tuned to almascots.com for schedule updates.
