Scots battle hard but drop two close ones

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio– The Alma College baseball team traveled to Wittenberg University on for an afternoon doubleheader against the Tigers. The Scots dropped two close games by the final scores of 3-2 and 7-6. 

Leading off the game for Alma, Kevin Tuttle singled to shortstop. Tuttle advanced to second on a wild pitch to put himself into scoring position. Later in the inning, Joshua Robinson drew a walk and put two Scots on base with Avery Caricom up to bat. Carnicom would then single to shortstop and Tuttle rounded third and crossed home to take the lead for Alma. Wittenberg was held off the board in the first inning but would add one run in the second and two in the third to take a 3-1 lead for the Tigers. Both teams stayed off the board until Alma would make a ninth inning push. Nolan Chillcut would lead off for the Scots in the final frame and take the pitch over the outfield wall for a solo homerun. Alma would not generate any more runs and dropped the first game of the day.  

After a momentarily break, both teams were looking to close out the series with a win. Wittenberg struck first with two runs in the bottom of the second. Alma was held off the board until the fifth inning, when they scored a handful of runs. With runners on first and third, Tuttle reached first on an error and allowed Krafft to score from third to put Alma on the board. Robinson drew a walk following and loaded the bases. Carnicom then was hit by a pitch and Padyn Kesselring scored. Cooper Kauffold drew a walk and Tuttle would score. After a pitching change for the Tigers, Chillcut reached first on an error, which would allow the other three baserunners to score and take a 6-2 lead for Alma. Wittenberg would add five additional runs in the remaining innings and edge the Scots in the final game of the day.  

Chillcut and Carnicom tallied the only RBIs of the first game for the Scots. Alma players recording RBIs in the second game include Chillcut (3), Kauffold, Carnicom, and Tuttle. The pitching staff collected seven strikeouts in the first game and four in the following game.  

Alma will be back in action when they travel to Ohio Northern University on Thursday, March 24. The first pitch is scheduled for 4:00p.m.
