Box Score Columbus, OH – Alma Women's Basketball was on the road on Monday evening to take on Capital in nonconference action. Alma lost a heartbreaker by a final of 65-64.
The first half was low scoring as both team struggled with turnovers and scoring the ball. Alma found ways to pull in front by small margins of 2 or 4, but the hosts refused to let the Scots pull away from them. At the end of the first the game was even at 13. The second quarter featured stout defense and more turnovers as neither team made it to double digits in the second frame. At the half the score was 22 all.
The scoring picked up out of the break, with Alma pulling front and looking to run away in the third quarter. However, Capital would go on a pair of runs to bring the gap back down to 3 heading into the final frame. In the 4th quarter Alma got into foul trouble early, with the Comets riding the bonus to stay in the game. Capital fought hard and finally took the lead with under a minute to play. Alma looked to have the game won when Taylor Sas converted an and-one to give Alma a one point lead with 1.8 seconds left. Heartbreak struck as after an out of bounds poke by the Scots, Capital scored as the clock expired to claim victory by a final of 65-64.
Alma was led by Izzy Alston, who scored 19 points while grabbing 9 rebounds, 2 blocks and a steal. Taylor Sas also contributed 18 points and 7 rebounds while dishing out 4 assists. Brooke Leroux scored 9 points, all from beyond the arc, and Olivia Warren added 7 points with 4 rebounds and 5 assists. Reagan Thorr also helped with 5 assists and 5 rebounds.
The Scots will be back in action on Saturday against Kalamazoo on the road as they open up MIAA conference play.
