Football Moves to 8-0 For The First Time Since 1968

Box Score

Olivet, MI – Alma Football played their final road game of the regular season on Saturday at Olivet College. Alma was victorious by a final score of 49-35. The win moves Alma to 8-0, a mark they haven't hit in 54 years, dating back to 1968.

This one was entertaining all the way from start to finish. Alma jumped out to an early lead in the first. The Scots forced a fumble and the offense capitalized on the short field with a 5 yard touchdown pass from Carter St. John to Devon Frenchko. Alma doubled that score just 6 minutes later. St. John tossed another touchdown, this time 8 yards to Nathan Goralski. Number 13 liked the endzone in the first quarter, as Goralski hauled in another touchdown from St. John, this one 12 yards out. St. John then added another score on the ground from 9 yards out to put Alma up 28-0 at the end of the first. The second quarter saw the defenses settle in, and the only scoring was Eddie Williams on a 21-yard pass from St. John with 21 seconds to go in the half. Alma led 35-0 at halftime.

Out of the half, it was the home side who did the majority of the scoring. An Alma turnover allowed the Comets to punch in their first score of the day on a 2-yard rush. Alma would fire back with St. John scoring his second rushing touchdown of the game from 17 yards out. Olivet scored on the very next play from scrimmage with a 67 yard pass. This put the score at 42-14 heading into the 4th. Olivet quickly threw up 2 more touchdowns to make it a 42-28 ballgame, before Alma could score to put things away with an Eddie Williams 2 yard touchdown score. The hosts scored once more in the closing stages to pull within 2 scores, but the game finished 49-35.

Carter St. John led the aerial attack for Alma going 24-34 for 227 yards, with 4 touchdowns and 1 interception. The freshman QB also led the Scots on the ground with 91 yards on 11 rushes and 2 more touchdowns. Eddie Williams also added 69 yards and a score on 15 attempts. Williams got some work in through the air as well, hauling in 4 passes for 75 yards and a touchdown. Nathan Goralski also caught 10 balls for 72 and 2 scores, with Devon Frenchko picking up a TD as well.

Defensively, Odin Soffredine led Alma in tackles with 8 total. The Scots defense also forced 4 turnovers on the day. Drew Humm, Austin Flowers, and Bryce Fredenburg all nabbed a pick, with Jerome Roberson recovering a fumble. Roberson also had a sack, along with Evan Metiva and Patrick Hite who each had a half a sack.

Alma will be in action at home next week as they welcome in Adrian College.
