Box Score Kalamazoo, MI – Alma Football hit the road on Saturday to take on Kalamazoo in MIAA Conference play. The Scots claimed victory 45-21.
Alma scored the opening points of the ballgame in the first, with a 9 play, 55 yard drive capped off by a Ja'martae Hogan 5 yard rushing touchdown to go up 7-0. The Scots struck again, and again it was on the ground. This time Carter St. John took the rock 50 yards to the house to cap an 8 play, 80 yard drive. It was 21-0 just minutes later as Devon Frenchko hauling in a 35 yard pass from St. John. One more touchdown was put up before the half, with a 7 yard TD pass from St. John to Cole Thomas ending a 12 play, 79 yard drive.
In the third Kalamazoo connected on a long touchdown, but the Scots answered quickly. Alma drove 65 yards in 7 plays culminating in a 4 yard pass from St. John to Ty Lotterman. A Joshua Hernandez field goal from 43 yards out gave the visitors their largest lead of the day at 38-7. The hosts tacked on another touchdown, and Alma swung back in 2 plays with a 67 yard rushing TD from Hogan. The Hornets scored once more in the waning minutes, but Alma took home the win 45-21.
Carter St. John led Alma through the air, going 19 of 25 for 210 yards and 3 touchdowns with 1 interception. St. John also led the Scots rushing totals with 97 yards and a touchdown. Eddie Williams totaled 88 yards, and Ja'martae Hogan rushed for 75 yards and 2 touchdowns on 5 rushing attempts. Devon Frenchko led the receivers with 76 yards and a score.
Josh Hernandez was 1-2 on the day, converting from 43 yards out, and going 6/6 on extra points.
Defensively, Alma nabbed one turnover with an interception from Bryce Fredenburg. Odin Soffredine and Gage Nelson led the Scots in tackles with 6. Jalen Dunwoody also broke through for 2 sacks on the day.
Alma improves to 7-0 for the first time since 1994, and hits the road again next week against MIAA opponent Olivet.
