Box Score ANGOLA, Ind. – The Alma College men's basketball team traveled to Indiana to take on Trine University on Wednesday, Jan. 19. The Scots came out victorious with a final score of 57-55.
The Scots came out of the gates running, starting on a 14-4 run in the first 10 minutes of gameplay. Trine tightened the game up and closed out the half trailing the Scots, 28-22. The Scots shot over 50 percent from the floor in the first half and out-rebounded the Thunder, 15-13.
Trine came out of the break strong, quickly making it a one-possession game. Alma would find their flow again and stretch the lead back to six, but Trine again would battle back and took the lead with 12 minutes remaining.
Possessions became crucial on both sides of the ball and Alma would battle the Thunder to regain the lead and slow down Trine's momentum. Brandon Rake put down a dunk from a pass by Brandon Whiteside with six minutes remaining to give Alma a nine-point lead. Trine battled back and trailed the Scots by only three until Cole Kleiver knocked down a three with two minutes left.
After a three and some free throws by Trine, it was once again a one-point game. Alma's Brandon Whiteside was forced to go to the free-throw line, where he knocked down one of the two shots and made the score 57-55. Trine would not create any offense after the free throw and the Scots came out of Indiana with their first conference win.
Leading the Scots offensively was Cole Kleiver with 17 points. Gabe Bourdeau followed behind with 11 points. Landen Moore-Pierce and Brandon Rake led the Scots with seven rebounds each. Moore-Pierce also led with four assists.
The Scots finished the game with more points off the bench than the Thunder, 28-9. Alma also shot 50 percent from beyond the arc.
The Scots will stay on the road as they travel to Holland to take on Hope College. The game will take place on Saturday, Jan. 22. Tipoff is at 7:30 p.m.
