UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Alma College track and field teams competed at the SVSU Classic on Friday (Jan. 14). It was the first action for the Scots in over a month as they returned from the holiday vacation.
Once again, Bailey Hoffman had an outstanding meet. The senior broke her own school record in the weight throw again with a toss of 16.00 meters even, good for fourth place overall in the event. She was also eighth in the shot put with a throw of 11.42 meters.
Cornelia Gotaas had a strong meet for Alma with a seventh place finish in the women's 800-meter run. The junior finished with a time of 2:28.61. Victoria Gotaas was sixth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:06.82. Those two teamed up with Andrea Taghon and Ericka Bigham to earn a sixth place finish in the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 4:25.41.
In the men's long jump, Joey Gonzales finished ninth with a mark of 6.14 meters. Jacob Campbell was 13th in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:11.06. Senior Sean Pauley took 16th in the men's 3000-meter race with a time of 9:29.28.
From Head Coach Matt Chovanec:
"It was great to get back to competing again with some very solid performances coming off our break. What stood out was the number of people on our team that stayed the course when they were at home over break and got their training done. And as for Bailey, what can I say? Another school record! Her success is due in large part to her dedication and being a student of her events. We are looking forward to seeing where it takes her. Overall, there's still a long way to go in the season, but we are excited about where we are all at right now. Back to it again next week."
Up next:
The Scots will travel back to SVSU next Friday (Jan. 21) for the Doug Hansen Open. The meet will begin at 2:30 pm.
