Albion, Mich.- The Alma College track and field team opened its outdoor season at Albion College on Friday (Apr. 9). The men's team finished in fifth place with a score of 50 points, while the women took third with 79 points.
In the field events for the women, Mariah Dunkin took first place in the discus throw with a toss of 38.08 meters. Dunkin would also earn a second place finish in the shotput while Charley Hengesbach took third in both shot and disc. Hengesbach would also add a second place finish in the hammer throw with a mark of 43.17 meters. Grace Hearth would earn points for the Scots in the triple jump with a fifth place finish and a jump of 9.72 meters. Hearth would also place fourth in the high jump with a mark of 1.48 meters.
On the track for the women, Haley Trickey took seventh in the 1500 meter run with a time of 5:24.13. Cornelia Gotaas ran to fourth place in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:26.73. Stephanie Davis finished in fifth place in the 400 meter hurdle race with a time of 1:12.76. In the 400 meter dash, Audrey Padilla took fourth place while Victoria Austin finished right behind in fifth place. Padilla finished with a time 1:03.53, while Austin ran 1:04.46. In the 5000 meter run, Elizabeth Gotaas finished third with a time of 21:35.22. The 4x400 relay saw the team of Austin, Padilla, Cornelia Gotaas and Andrea Taghon finish in second with a time of 4:15.62.
On the men's side, Jacob Eck earned a 6th place finish in the shotput with a toss of 12.16 meters. Nolan Rowland earned the victory in the pole vault with a mark of 4.29 meters. On the track, Jacob Wildenhaus won the 110 meter hurdle race with a time of 15.55 seconds. Wildenhaus would add a fourth place finish in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:02.70. Nathan Idalski won the 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 10:51.69. The 5000 meter run saw Sean Pauley earn a second place finish in a time of 16:18.23. The 4x400 meter relay team of Cliff Maginity, Ross McNeel, Jacob Campbell, and Sawyer Hill finished in fifth place with a time of 3:49.53.
"I truly appreciate how this team comes to compete with each opportunity they've had this year. And today was no different." Head Coach Matt Chovanec said. "They haven't let all these frustrations with Covid get in the way, and they go out each week giving their best effort. We coaches are so proud of them and can't wait to see them compete at home next Friday. It should be another great day for us."
The Scots will be back in action when they host the Charles A. Gray Collegiate Invite at Bahlke Field on Friday (Apr. 16). The meet will begin at 2:00 p.m.
