Alma, Mich.- The Alma College Track and Field teams hosted their first meet since 2017 on Friday (Apr. 16) at Bahlke Field. The Scots had solid performances on both the women's and men's side. The women were able to come away with the victory with 159 points, while the men were 5th with 77 points. Prior to the meet the Scots honored their senior class.
In field events, Charley Hengesbach was the winner in the women's discus throw with a toss of 36.63 meters while Mariah Dunkin finished second with a mark of 36.02 meters. Denver Jewell won the men's javelin with a toss of 40.72 meters. Dunkin would finish second in women's shotput while Hengesbach was third with tosses of 11.38 meters and 11.03 meters. Hengesbach would earn more points with a second place finish in the women's hammer throw with a toss of 42.08 meters. Grace Hearth was third in the women's triple jump with a jump of 9.59 meters, while Stephanie Davis was fifth in women's long jump with a mark of 4.25 meters. Hearth would add a third place finish in the women's high jump with a jump of 1.48 meters.
On the track, the Scots had double winners in Cornelia Gotaas and Jacob Wildenhaus. Gotaas won the 1500 meter and 800 meter races with times of 5:13.33 and 2:32.27. Wildenhaus was victorious in both hurdle races, finishing with a time of 15.63 in the 110 meter hurdles and 59.59 in the 400 meter hurdles. Nathan Idalski picked up 10 points in the 3000 meter steeplechase with a winning time of 10:33.14. Davis would win the women's 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:12.24, edging out teammate Andrea Taghon who finished in 1:12.27. Elizabeth Gotaas would win the women's 5000 meter run with a time of 21:23.05.
The women's 4x400 meter relay team of Gotaas, Taghon, Audrey Padilla, and Victoria Austin were winners with a time of 4:20.81. In the men's race, the team of Ross McNeel, Cliff Maginity, Jacob Campbell, and Sawyer Hill finished in fourth place with a time of 3:45.19.
"What a great day it was for us!" head coach Matt Chovanec said, "We had the opportunity to compete at home and we took full advantage of it. If we look at this as a preview of what it's going to be like when we host the MIAA Championship in May, I am excited to see what we really can do in the moment. We just need to stay the course with our practices and be ready to compete when the time comes."
Alma will have a few weeks off before hosting the MIAA Outdoor Championships on May 6-7. The meet will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday (May 6) and 10:00 a.m. Friday (May 7).
