Box Score 2 CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. – The Alma College baseball team earned a doubleheader sweep on Saturday at Wabash College with wins of 4-0 and 11-6. The Scots move to .500 on the season with a 3-3 record.
In game one, senior Dylan Dzendzel pitched a complete game shutout while giving up only four hits and striking out four. The Alma offense came through with some clutch two-out hitting to score some runs and take the win.
In game two, the Scots' bats came alive with five different players having multiple hits and the team recording a total of 12 in the game. Jayden Drake also earned his first career win on the mound by throwing 8.1 innings.
In the opening game of the day, Dzendzel faced a tough spot in the first inning with a bases loaded and one out. The senior was able to work out of it by forcing a ground out at home plate and then fly out to retire the side. The two outs started a run of 16 straight batters retired by Dzendzel.
The Scots offense got going in the fourth by loading up the bases with one out for Alex Dwan. The senior drove Joshua Robinson and Avery Carnicom home on a single for the first runs of the game.
Alma added on a run in the fifth as Zach Schirmer earned a two-out bases loaded walk to make it 3-0 Scots. In the sixth, Jaret Koin hit a single that brought home Noah Chillcut with two outs to put Alma in front, 4-0.
Dzendzel continued to cruise on the mound into the late innings, after giving up a leadoff double in the the seventh, the lefty sent the next three packing to finish off the game and seal the victory.
In game two, Alma put up five runs in the third inning with Robinson hitting a two-RBI double, then Zach Schirmer plating Robinson on a single, and finally Alex Dwan sending Schirmer home on a single.
Wabash made it a 5-3 game in the bottom of third, but the Scots went right back to the hot-hitting with four more runs in the fourth. Kevin Tuttle, Carnicom, Robinson and Macguire Hawley all knocked in runs and Alma took a commanding 9-3 advantage.
The Scots added two more insurance runs in the fifth with Carnicom and Robinson knocking in the scores to make it 11-4 in favor of the Scots. Drake worked all the way into the ninth on the mound before Ty Sobczak came in relief to retire the final two batters and earn the doubleheader sweep for the Scots.
Robinson ended up with three RBI in the second while scoring two runs. Carnicom knocked in two runs while scoring two of his own.
The Scots will look to earn a series sweep of Wabash tomorrow when they hit the field for a 12:00 p.m. game on Sunday.
