Women's Track and Field Competes at Indoor MIAA Championship

Grand Rapids, Mich. - The Alma College Women's Track and Field team traveled to Calvin University for the MIAA Indoor Championship meet on Friday (Mar. 5). As a team, the Scots finished in 5th place with 48 points. Hope College won the title with 183 points.

The Scots had plenty of stellar performances on the day. Junior Bailey Hoffman followed up her school record breaking performance last week in the weight throw by breaking it again. She finished in second place in the event with a toss of 15.79 meters. Senior Charley Hengesbach and sophomore Mariah Dunkin also earned points in the weight throw by finishing in seventh and eighth place. Hengesbach and Duncan also earned points in the shotput, with Hengesbach finishing in second place with a toss of 11.68 meters, and Dunkin finishing in eighth with a throw of 11.27 meters. Alma also earned points in the triple jump when senior Grace Hearth finished in sixth place with a jump of 9.65 meters. 

In the running events, senior Stephanie Davis and freshman Andrea Taghon both placed in the 60 meter hurdles. Taghon finished in seventh with a time of 10.34, while Davis finished eighth in 10.84 seconds. The 400 meter dash saw Audrey Padilla and Victoria Austin earn points in the event. Padilla finished in sixth place with a time of 1:03.49, Austin was right behind in 1:03.93. In the 800 meter run, sophomore Cornelia Gotaas finished in fourth place with a time of 2:23.32. Gotaas was also apart of the distance medley relay team along with Davis, Hearth, and Haley Trickey. They finished in fifth place with a time of 13:47.23. 

The final event of the evening saw the Scots earn second place in the 4x400 meter relay. Gotaas, Padilla, Austin, and Taghon closed out the meet in impressive fashion with a time of 4:15.00.

"We came to compete, it was a team effort all around. We scored points where we thought we could and the 4x4 capped off a great day. I am so happy we were able to get our season in, and look forward to outdoor and watching this group get even better."-Head coach Matt Chovanec.
