Season Ends for Women's Basketball in MIAA First Round

Box Score

ALMA, Mich. - The Alma College women's basketball team lost against Calvin University, 69-63, in the first round of the MIAA Tournament on Monday. Alma ends their season with an overall record 8-7 on their third-straight year of reaching the postseason. Calvin University (5-5) advances to the tournament semifinals to face No. 1 seed Hope College on Wednesday.

Taylor Sas was a force to be reckoned with on both sides of the ball, earning a double-double tonight. She scored 19 points, got 11 rebounds, one assist, and two steals. Sas also went 4-of-5 at the free throw line tonight.

Jeny Brandt and Maddie Robbins each tallied 14 points and seven rebounds. Brandt also had one steal and one block tonight. Robbins boosted her stats with two assists and two steals.

The Scots were in a 13-point hole in the fourth quarter but battled back with a 12-0 run to make it a one-point game at 57-56. During the run, Robbins had two steals that led to buckets at the other end. A huge four-point play from Sas electrified the Art Smith Arena crowd as she sank a 3-pointer while also being fouled.

Calvin would push its lead up again with Alma cutting it back to two with less than two minutes remaining. The Knights then started earning trips to the free throw line where they found much success to put away the Scots.

Oretha Humphries scored seven points in tonight's game, a season-high.

Taylor Findlay led the team with three assists.

Alma's leading scorer this season, Morgan Hanchett, had to leave the game in the opening minute and never came back onto the floor for the rest of the night.

Brand and fellow senior Emily Long end their careers as Scots tonight. Brandt finishes as the program's leader in career blocks with 142 blocks.

"I couldn't be more proud of our fight and effort for 40 minutes. I'm really proud off this team and how they've handled adversity all year long," Head Coach Sami Stormont said. "Our seniors have done great things for this program and will be truly missed. I'm looking forward to getting back to work with our returns. Thank you to all the administration at Alma College that made this season possible."
