Wrestling hosts Alma Open

Alma, Mich. – The Alma College wrestling team hosted the Alma Open Saturday (Jan. 18). Over 170 wrestlers made the trek through the winter wonderland to Scotland, USA. There was a wide variety of talented athletes ranging from Division I to Division III. Dylan Seaton (Port Huron, Mich. / Port Huron Northern) placed fourth and Lucas Brewer (Belleville, Mich. / Huron) sixth in the 174 weight class.

What Happened

  • Nicholas Dawson (Gladstone, Mich. / Gladstone Area) and Zachariah Kelley (Freeport, Mich. / Thornapple Kellogg) competed in the 125 weight class. Dawson started the day against the eventual winner but ended up going 2-2 on the day. Kelley faced DI, DII, and Juco talent, including the third place finisher from Michigan State University, and went 1-2. Both had a pin in the second period.
  • Carter Hankins (Hartland, Mich. / Hartland) was the lone Scot in the 141 weight class. He had a 2-2 record on the day. Three of the four matches were won by decision.
  • Mason Priest (Grandville, Mich. / Grandville) and Joseph Muzzin (Riverview, Mich. / Woodhaven) both went 2-2 on the day in the 149 weight class. Both faced an opponent that finished in the top three.
  • The 174 weight class featured three Scots, Erik Arnegard (Waterford, Mich. / Waterford Mott), Brewer, and Seaton. Arnegard lost in the quarterfinals to the eventual winner. Brewer started off 2-0 before losing in the semifinals to the eventual runner up. Seaton suffered a first match loss but bounced back with three straight wins by pin fall. In the third place match he faced the same opponent that he started the day with, losing a tight one 4-3.

Notables

  • Seaton finished eighth at the open in most pins in the least time.
  • Peter Nicaj (Ortonville, Mich. / Ortonville-Brandon) and Muzzin had the 12th and 13th fastest fall, respectively.
  • Priest tied fifth for most single match points with 18.
  • The Scots had seven wins by pin fall on the day.

Next Up

The Alma College wrestling team will travel to Olivet College Thursday (Jan. 23) for their final conference dual of the year. The Scots will need to beat the Comets to have a chance at the conference title.
