Scots Fall in Season Opener

Alma, Mich. - The Alma College wrestling team opened the season with a 25-20 loss to Davenport University. Austin Wieczorek (Kentwood, Mich. / East Kentwood) and Austin Fox (Fort Worth, Texas / Timber Creek) both won by pin fall. Matt Tomsett (Madison Heights, Mich. / Lamphere) won by technical fall 18-2.

What Happened

  • Wieczorek started the night out in the 125 weight class with a pin fall in the third period.

  • Tomsett won by technical fall. He started out strong with a takedown, four-point, and two-point nearfall giving him a 8-1 lead after period one. Tomsett finished the match in the second period when he got a takedown and two four-point near falls.

  • Fox won the quickest match of the dual. He pinned his opponent in the first 56 seconds.

  • Jacob Ransom (Traverse City, Mich. / Traverse City West) finished the dual with a 4-3 decision for the Scots. After being down 3-2 in period one, Ransom chose to go on bottom and escaped and received a one point penalty. No points were scored in the third period.

Up Next

The Scots will head to the west side of the state for the Muskegon Community College Invitational starting at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday (Nov. 9). The next home meet for Alma will not be until 2020. It starts MIAA competition against Trine University (IN) on January 7.
