Naperville, Ill. - The Alma College track and field team sent five Scots to the campus of North Central College (IL) for the Cardinals' annual Gregory Invitational on Wednesday (May 16) for one final day of competition in 2018.
Senior Chelse Van Spronsen (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) and sophomore Blaire Showers (Ithaca, Mich./Ithaca) made the trip to compete in the women's 5000-meter run. Van Spronsen finished fifth with a season-best time of 18:41.77, just six seconds from her career-best time. Wednesday marked the first time Showers has attempted the 5000-meter in her career, finishing in 21:02.52.
The remaining Scots attended the Gregory Invitational in the field. Senior James Taylor (Mason, Mich./Mason) posted an 11th-place finish in the men's hammer throw, recording a toss of 39.77 meters. Senior Karen Flesh (Aurora, Ill./Metea Valley) came closest of the throwers to her standing personal-best, coming within two feet of her best career hammer throw. Freshman Charley Hengesbach (Saginaw, Mich./Nouvel Catholic Central) turned in a 13th-place performance in the women's discus.
For Van Spronsen, Taylor, and Flesh, Wednesday marked the final competition in their Alma College track and field careers. The Gregory Invitational officially concludes the 2018 Alma College track and field season.
