Hunyadi's OT game winner lifts men's lacrosse in the snow at DePauw

Box Score

Greencastle, Ind. - Sophomore Chase Hunyadi (Pepper Pike, Ohio/University School) scored 15 seconds into the second overtime on Saturday (March 24) to lift the Alma College men's lacrosse team to a 9-8 victory over DePauw University.

The Scots (3-7 overall) battled wintry weather conditions of every variety and played the second half in a driving snowstorm to close out their non-conference schedule, while Hunyadi led all players with four goals and an assist for five points.

Junior Jared Nycz (Elma, N.Y./Iroquois) also notched a hat trick with a season-high three goals and recorded a pair of helpers for five points.

Junior Cameron Stelljes (Okemos, Mich./Okemos) stopped seven shots in goal for the Scots.

How It Happened

  • Jared Nycz put Alma on the board less than two minutes into the game, scoring off a pass from Chase Hunyadi to make the score 1-0. DePauw answered with three straight goals to take a 3-1 advantage after the first 15 minutes.
  • In the second quarter, Alma opened the frame with back-to-back scores by Nycz to tie the game. DePauw regained the lead at 4-3 with 10:12 remaining in the half, only to see the Scots tie it again with 3:42 to play on a goal by Trevor Bailey. The Tigers went back up by a goal less than a minute later, but Chase Hunyadi scored with 2:21 left in the half to tie the game at 5-5 heading into the break.
  • Alma took the lead 1:06 into the second half when Hunyadi scored off a pass from Nycz, but DePauw battled back, scoring twice within 20 seconds to go up by a 7-6 margin with 9:49 to play. Hunyadi tied the game with 3:25 left in the third, sending the teams into the fourth quarter deadlocked at 7-7.
  • In the fourth quarter, the Tigers took an 8-7 lead with 11:59 to play, but the Scots tied the game just over four minutes later when Austen Irrer found the net for the first time this season to tie the game at 8-8 and force the extra session.
  • Hunyadi's goal in the second overtime came on a breakout from the opening face-off. As the Scots entered the offensive zone, Connor Alley drew the goalie towards the far side of the net, leaving Hunyadi all alone on the right side of the cage for the catch and score.
