Baseball swept at Wheaton Invitational

Carol Stream, Ill. - The Alma College baseball team was swept in its two games on Saturday (March 17) at the Wheaton College Invitational, falling to Saint Mary's College (MN) by a 10-5 margin before dropping a 9-1 decision to the host Thunder.

Alma will open the home portion of its season on Tuesday, March 20, with a 2 p.m. doubleheader against Finlandia University at Klenk Park.

Game 1 - St. Mary's (MN) 10, Alma 5

  • Sophomore Vann Acker (Eaton Rapids, Mich./Eaton Rapids) led the Scots with three hits - recording a single, double, and triple - while sophomore Josh Riggs (Irons, Mich./Brethren) and freshman Pete Carravallah (Canton, Mich./Plymouth) each tallied two hits as the Scots surrendered a 3-2 lead after five innings.
  • After the Cardinals (5-7 overall) scored in the top of the first to open the game, Caravallah connected on a RBI single to tie the game in the bottom of the fourth. St. Mary's regained the lead in the top of the fifth on a sacrifice fly, but the Scots responded, scoring twice in the bottom of the fifth after a triple by Acker and a double by sophomore Logan Huff (Johannesburg, Mich./Johannesburg-Lewiston). 
  • St. Mary's scored six runs in the top of the sixth to open up the game, taking an 8-3 lead. The Cardinals added a pair of scores in the top of the eighth to go up 10-3.
  • Senior Matthew Minaudo (Clinton Township, Mich./De La Salle Collegiate finished the scoring with a two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth. 
  • Freshman Joseph Barrons (Kingston, Mich./Kingston) threw for 5.2 innings and struck out six as the starter while taking the loss. 

Game 2 - at Wheaton 9, Alma 1

  • Wheaton (7-4 overall) scored the game's first four runs, then added a pair of scores in the sixth and eighth innings while limiting Alma to just four hits.
  • Logan Huff tallied two of the hits for the Scots, while freshman Alex Dwan (Saginaw, Mich./Nouvel Catholic Central) connected for a double. The Scots' only run came in the top of the fifth inning when Huff scored.
  • Sophomore Dylan Dzendzel (Royal Oak, Mich./Royal Oak) lasted 4.1 innings against the Thunder, striking out four, as the Scots went deep into the bullpen during the game.

Up Next

Alma will open the home portion of its schedule on Tuesday, March 20, with a non-conference doubleheader against Finlandia University. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Klenk Park.
