Box Score Alma, Mich. - The Alma College women's basketball team came away with its second straight win with a 58-51 victory over Saint Mary's on Wednesday (Feb. 14) evening. Alma improves to 4-20 with the win and 2-13 in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association while Saint Mary's falls to 6-18 and 3-12.
The program recognized and celebrated its two seniors, Chloee King (Standish, Mich. / Standish-Sterling Central) and Abbigale Phillipson (Hemlock, Mich. / Hemlock), prior to the game.
Emily Eldridge (Battle Creek, Mich. / Battle Creek Lakeview) led the Scots with 15 points and 12 rebounds, setting a new career-high on the boards. Madison Hill (Battle Creek, Mich. / Battle Creek Lakeview) pitched in 14 points including going 8-of-9 from the free throw line. Jeny Brandt (Escanaba, Mich. / Escanaba) was also in double-figures with 12 points and six rebounds.
The Belles' Gabby Diamond scored 15 points while Giavanna Paradiso added 13 off the bench.
How It Happened
- Five Scots scored in a back-and-forth first quarter that saw five leads and a lead no bigger than four points. Diamond led all scorers in the quarter with eight points.
- Alma made eight of its 16 shots in the second quarter and held the Belles to 31-percent shooting to take a 35-24 lead into the half. The Scots opened up the quarter on a 13-2 run; Eldridge scored six points during the 4:12 span.
- The Scots struggled from the field in the third quarter, making three of their ten shots, but still maintained a two-point lead going into the final ten minutes.
- Alma iced the game from the free throw line in the last frame, going 13-of-19 from the stripe, including 6-of-7 from Hill. She led all scorers with eight points in the quarter. The Scots opened the quarter on a 7-0 run to take a nine-point lead and never looked back.
Notables
- Eldridge tallied her second straight double-double and third of her career with her totals.
- Fourteen points are the most Hill has scored since setting a career-high of 19 against Aquinas earlier this season.
- Jeny Brandt had three blocks, the most she has had since she posted the same amount against No. 3 Hope on Jan. 10. Brandt is currently seventh in the MIAA with 1.3 rejections per game.
- Brandt also made six field goals, tying her career-high.
- Alma pulled down 42 rebounds to Saint Mary's 30.
