Women's Basketball Falls in Resumption of MIAA Play

Alma, Mich. - The Alma College women's basketball team dropped a conference game to Kalamazoo 57-45 on Wednesday, Jan. 3, in the team's first home game in nearly four weeks. Alma is now 1-11 overall and 0-5 in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Kalamazoo is now 5-7 overall and 2-2 in the MIAA.

Madison Hill (Midland, Mich. / Bullock Creek) and Jessie Jordan (Mason, Mich. / Williamston) led the Scots in scoring with seven points each. Hill also added a game-high four assists. Charley Hengesbach (Saginaw, Mich. / Nouvel Catholic Central) had the team lead with eight rebounds and three blocks.

Isabelle Clark posted a game-high 17 points, going 5-of-11 from the field and 6-of-7 from the free throw line. Emily Kozal and Libby Munoz also scored in double figures.

How It Happened

  • In the first quarter, Kalamazoo opened up a 12-0 lead in the first five minutes, but the Scots responded with a 13-5 run to end the frame down 17-13.
  • Alma kept chipping away at the Hornets' lead and eventually grabbed the advantage with 2:30 to play in the second quarter on a basket by Emily Eldridge (Battle Creek, Mich. / Battle Creek Lakeview). The Scots went into the break up 26-24.
  • Alma came out of the half and built a five-point advantage on a three-point play by Hill, but a 10-2 run by Kalamazoo gave the Hornets a 39-34 lead. Alma closed the gap on a three-pointer by Madeline Barnauskas (Livonia, Mich. / Dearborn Divine Child) to make the score 39-37 to enter the final stanza.
  • Jordan hit a three-pointer to open the fourth quarter, giving Alma a 40-39 lead. Kalamazoo responded with a 17-0 run to blow the game open, taking a 16-point lead at 56-40 with under three minutes to play.

Up Next

Alma is back on the road for its next game. The Scots will travel to Grand Rapids to take on the Calvin College Knights on Saturday, Dec. 6 for a game at 3:00 p.m.
