Hot three-point shooting lifts Scots against Kalamazoo

Alma, Mich. - The Alma College men's basketball team completed their season sweep of Kalamazoo College on Saturday (Jan. 27) afternoon, cruising to an 83-67 victory over the Hornets on Saturday at Art Smith Arena. 

The Scots (7-12 overall, 4-4 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association) shot over 50 percent for the third straight game, hitting 30 of their 57 shots (.526), and recorded 24 assists, led by sophomore Ryan Stevens (Lowell, Mich./Lowell), who dished out 10 helpers. In addition, Alma hit a season-high 55.6 percent of its shots from behind the arc, making 15 of its 27 three-point attempts.

Alma, which never trailed in the game, now moves into a tie with Albion College for fifth place in the MIAA with six games remaining in the regular-season. The Scots and Britons are both one game behind a four-team pack that is tied for first with identical 5-3 records. 

Senior Kevin Scheibert (Sanford, Mich./Sanford-Meridian) led the Scots with 17 points on 6-for-8 shooting as five players reached double-figures. 

Kalamazoo (6-13, 1-7 MIAA) was led by Tanner Blyly's 24 points, while Jimmy Paprocki netted 22.

How It Happened

  • Alma utilized a number of players from its bench in the first half as the two teams played within one possession of each other for the first 10 minutes. The Scots began to pull away in the latter stages of the open 20 minutes, leading by as many as 13 points as Alma hit eight of its 15 three-pointers. The Scots led 46-37 at the break.
  • In the second half, Alma got out to a 20-point lead with 13 minutes to play thanks to an 8-0 run. The Scots cruised from there, leading by double-digits for the rest of the game.

  • Ryan Stevens has tallied seven or more assists in each of his last four games and posted double-digit helpers for the second time this year. 
  • Amari Hudson tallied a season-high 11 points.

The Scots will travel to Grand Rapids, Mich., on Wednesday, Jan. 31, to face Calvin College. In the first meeting between the two teams this year, the Knights posted an 80-63 victory on January 6 at Art Smith Arena. The opening tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Van Noord Arena on the campus of Calvin College.
