Wheaton, Ill. - The Alma College wrestling program was represented by five Scots at the annual Pete Willson Invitational, held on the campus of Wheaton College, on Friday (Jan. 26). Thirty-five teams competed in the event, including 12 teams ranked in the latest d3wrestle.com poll.
All of the Alma wresters were eliminated in the first day of competition. The semi-final and championship rounds of each weight class will take place on Saturday, Jan. 27.
What Happened
- At 149 pounds, sophomore Jake Anderson (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams) opened the day with one of two victories for the Scots, defeating Gavin Foushee of Thomas More (KY) in an 11-10 decision. Anderson would go on to fall to two wrestlers from ranked programs: No. 24 Ferrum (PA) and No. 29 Ohio Northern.
- The second victory for the Scots came in the 157-pound class via disqualification. Freshman Zachary Janderski (Bad Axe, Mich./Bad Axe) would move on only to face injury in his match with Grant Zamin of No. 16 Wisconsin-LaCrosse, ending his day.
- Freshman Joe Vondrasek (Owosso, Mich./Owosso) opened his day facing 25th-ranked Tanner Walker of Muskingum (OH), where he would be pinned in the third period. Vondrasek then fell to Ohio Northern's Seth Meyer, a rematch from the Ohio Northern Invitational on Dec. 2.
- Arguably the toughest match of the day for any Alma wrestler, freshman Erik Arnegard (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Mott) faced second-ranked Ben Swarr of No. 4 Messiah (PA) in the 174-pound bracket, losing the match by technical fall. Arnegard followed with a consolation-bracket loss to Tyler Mentzer of Elizabethtown (PA) in a 9-3 decision.
- In the heavyweight class, freshman Austin Popp (Clinton, Mich./Clinton) dropped both of his matches, first to 25th-ranked Emonte Logan of No. 28 North Central (IL), then to Steve Anderson of No. 8 Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
