Barnauskas, Hengesbach Lead Offensive Attack for Scots on Olivet

Olivet, Mich. - The Alma College women's basketball team defeated Olivet College 80-63 on Wednesday, Jan. 24. Alma is now 2-16 overall and 1-9 in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association while Olivet falls to 5-14 and 1-9.

Madeline Barnauskas (Livonia, Mich. / Dearborn Divine Child) led all players in scoring with 22 points on 7-of-12 shooting, including making four of her five three-pointers and adding four rebounds. Charley Hengesbach (Saginaw, Mich. / Nouvel Catholic Central) tallied 16 points on 7-of-10 from the field to go with six boards. Madison Hill (Midland, Mich. / Bullock Creek) dished out nine assists while Chloee King (Standish, Mich. / Standish-Sterling Central) notched eight helpers and 11 points.

Olivet was led by Sydnee Davis, who scored 15 points on five made three's. Grace Clark and Shawnee Dame also tallied double-digits in points.

How It Happened

  • The first quarter was close until the final 3:27. The Scots broke a 9-9 tie with a 10-2 run led by Barnauskas, who scored seven points over the 2:12 span. Alma took a 22-16 lead into the second quarter after a three-pointer by Hill with two seconds left.
  • The second quarter was fairly even, though Alma worked its way to a 12 point lead at 33-21 at the 4:48 mark. Olivet was able to close the gap to six, but the Scots still took an eight-point lead into halftime. Barnauskas had 10 points at the break while Jeny Brandt (Escanaba, Mich. / Escanaba) had eight points and five rebounds. Alma held the Comets to 34-percent shooting after 20 minutes.
  • Hengesbach made Alma's first two shots coming out of the break to get the lead back up to 12. It was extended to 15, the biggest of the game to that point, after a three-pointer by King and layups by Barnauskas and Hengesbach with 5:47 remaining in the quarter. Alma would carry the 15 point lead into the fourth frame.
  • Olivet's first four made shots of the fourth quarter were three-pointers. The Comets would cut the lead to 10, but Alma would not allow them to get any closer. The Scots scored 11 of the games final 15 points to seal the win.

Notables

  • This was Alma's best offensive game of the season. The Scots tied their season-high in field goals made (30) and set new season-highs in field goal percentage (51.7), three-pointers made (nine) three-point percentage (60-percent) and assists (25).
  • Madeline Barnauskas finished one point and one made field goal shy of her career-highs, which she set against Adrian earlier this season.
  • Charley Hengesbach tied her career-high of 16 points and set a new career high with five blocked shots. Hengesbach is currently second in the MIAA with 2.1 blocks per game.
  • Alma had 25 assists on 30 made shots.
  • Madison Hill set a new career-high in assists with nine, while Chloee King tied her career-high with eight. Ashtyn Maniez (St. Louis, Mich. / St. Louis) also recorded a career-high five assists in six minutes.
  • Alma won every quarter of the game.
