Alma, Mich. - The Alma College wrestling team hosted its annual Alma Open on Saturday, Jan. 20. The meet featured over 120 wrestlers representing over 20 schools from across the Midwest.

No team scores were kept at the event.

What Happened

• Freshman Wesley Barnes (Grand Ledge, Mich./Grand Ledge) led the Scots on the day with a fifth-place performance in the 184-pound bracket. Barnes went 3-2 overall, scoring all three victories by pinfall.
• At 165 pounds, freshman Joe Vondrasek (Owosso, Mich./Owosso) claimed a sixth-place finish. Like Barnes, Vondrasek scored both of his two wins by pinfall, including one over Olivet's Nicholas Worden.
• Also finishing sixth, in the 125-pound class, freshman Austin Wieczorek (Kentwood, Mich./East Kentwood) scored a key 4-3 decision over Ethan Curtin representing Michigan State University.
• Senior Daniel Sayfie (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Catholic Central) recorded his first official results since his freshman year as he and sophomore Jake Anderson (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester Adams) represented Alma in the 149-pound bracket. Sayfie claimed one major decision, while Anderson scored a pin over Olivet's Easton Maus.

Notables

• As a team, Alma scored eight victories by pinball, five coming by the hands of Barnes and Vondrasek.
• Two Scots, freshmen Gus Richter (Durand, Mich./Durand) and Jacob Smith (New Bern, N.C./New Bern), snapped losing streaks of over five matches.
