By Harrison LaLone, Sports Information student assistant

Grand Rapids, Mich. - Alma College track and field travelled to the campus of Aquinas College for their Quad Meet on Friday (Jan. 19). Both the men's and women's teams finished fourth at the competition.

What Happened

  • The pits were the biggest success of the evening for the Scots as sophomores John Mitrzyk (Standish, Mich. / Standish-Sterling) and Payton Hirschenberger (Freeland, Mcih. / Saginaw Nouvel) won the long jump and triple jump respectively. Both also set new career-bests: 6.63 meters for Mitrzyk, 12.97 meters for Hirchenberger.
  • Sophomore Blaire Showers (Ithaca, Mich. / Ithaca) placed second in the 800 meter run, posting a time of 2:29.03.
  • Sophomore Jacob Wildenhaus (Jackson, Mich. / Lumen Christi) finished the 60 meter hurdles in 9.14 seconds, also good for second in that event.
  • The Scots held second and third in the men's one mile run, with freshman Karl Stroup (White Lake, Mich. / Lakeland) finishing in 4:54.98 and sophomore Jack Montgomery (Mikado, Mich. / Oscoda Area) finishing within a second.
  • The Scots took third and fourth in both throwing events on the men's side as senior James Taylor (Mason, Mich. / Mason) and sophomore George Murphy (Hastings, Mich. / Hastings) had personal-best days at both shot put and weight throw.
  • Junior Kyle Kraus (Middleville, Mich. / Thornapple-Kellogg) claimed third in the men's high jump, hopping over the bar at 1.70 meters.
  • Juniors Erin Goggins (Hastings, Mcih. / Hastings) and Justin Jones (Rockford, Mich. / Cedar Springs) each registered fourth-place finishes for Alma. Goggins went for 3.12 meters in pole vault, while Jones finished the 800 meter run in 2:06.15
  • In the women's triple jump, junior Lauren Kucharczyk (Livonia, Mich. / Churchill) finished fifth, jumping for 8.72 meters.
