Women's basketball holds on against Kalamazoo

Box Score

Alma, Mich. - The Alma College women's basketball team won its annual Pink Game on Wednesday (Feb. 1) night at Art Smith Arena, defeating Kalamazoo College, 80-78. The Scots (6-14 overall, 4-7 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association) had five players in double figures and withstood a second-half comeback by the Hornets (3-17, 2-9 MIAA).

The game was played as a tribute to the Keisha Brown Angel Wings Fund, named in honor of former Alma College women's basketball coach Keisha Brown, who passed away from cancer in 2014. Damon Brown, the fund's executive director, presented Alma College with a check for $25,000 in honor of Keisha during halftime.

Senior Tara Padgett (Freeland, Mich./Freeland) and junior Skylr Goodman (Standish, Mich./Standish Sterling) led the Scots with 14 points each, while Goodman collected a game-high 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the season.

Sophomore Kelsey Wolffis (Muskegon, Mich./Mona Shores) added 13 points and a pair of blocks, while senior Kaitlyn Kendall (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington) scored 12. Freshman Hannah Thelen (Pewamo, Mich./Pewamo-Westphalia) rounded out the top scorers with 10 points.

The Scots jumped out to a 14-point lead after the first quarter and led by 20 at the break, 54-34. The Hornets began to climb back into the game in the third quarter, outscoring the Scots 16-10 during the frame. In the fourth quarter, Alma led 78-63 with 2:55 to play before the Hornets put together a 9-0 run to pull within six points with 36 seconds left. Kalamazoo was able to make a three pointer with 13 seconds left to get within four points, but the Scots kept the game at bay from the free throw line.

Alma will travel to Olivet College on Saturday, Feb. 4., for a 3:00 p.m. contest. In the first meeting between the two teams this season, the Scots defeated the Comets, 66-48.
