Women's basketball downs Olivet, 66-48

Alma, Mich. - The Alma College women's basketball team snapped a four-game slide on Wednesday (Jan. 4) night at Art Smith Arena, registering a 66-48 win over visiting Olivet College. The Scots improved to 3-9 overall and 2-2 in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association with the victory, while the Comets remained winless on the season, falling to 0-12 overall and 0-4 in the MIAA.

Senior Tara Padgett (Freeland, Mich./Freeland) led all players with 18 points, hitting six of her 13 shots, including four of her eight three-point attempts. She also added six assists and three steals, giving her 135 in her career and tying her for seventh place on the all-time list with Ann Sheedy. Senior Kaitlyn Kendall (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington) recorded a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 10 rebounds, while sophomore Kelsey Wolffis (Muskegon, Mich./Mona Shores) added 15 points on 7-for-15 shooting while adding five blocks. Wolffis has moved into second place on the all-time list with 94 blocks in her career, passing Meagan Hobblet. She is also first in the conference with 2.9 blocks per game.

Olivet was led by Jillian Nickels' 10 points, while Jazmin Hildebrand pulled down seven rebounds.

The Scots shot 42.9 percent as a team and out-rebounded the Comets, 43-38, while forcing 22 turnovers. Alma held Olivet to 28 percent shooting from the field. The Scots never trailed in the game and held a tight 26-21 lead at the half. Alma was able to pull away in the final two frames, building a 10-point lead early in the fourth quarter en route to the victory.

The Scots will travel to Saint Mary's College on Saturday, Jan. 7, for a 3:00 p.m. contest with the Belles.
