Box Score Olivet, Mich. - The Alma College men's basketball team suffered a 100-93 setback to Olivet College on Wednesday (Jan. 25) night as the Scots wrapped up the first half of play in their Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association schedule.
Alma (8-10 overall, 4-2 MIAA) was led by senior Trevor Gernaat (McBain, Mich./Northern Michigan Christian/Mid-Michigan CC), who scored 26 points to pace Alma for the 12th time this season. Gernaat, who has scored 26 or more points in each of his last three games, made 10 of 22 shots, including five of his 14 three-point attempts, and collected eight rebounds.
Senior Tyler Edwards (Flint, Mich./Swartz Creek) posted a double-double for the fifth time this season and second time in as many games with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while a trio of freshmen all reached double figures.
Luke Lamoreaux (Sterling Heights, Mich./Stevenson) netted a season-high 14 points, Jared Long (Montrose, Mich./Montrose) scored a season-high 13 points and Preston Laketa (Concord, Mich./Hanover-Horton) tallied 11. Laketa has now scored in double figured in 13 of his 14 games since being inserted into the lineup.
Olivet (7-11, 3-4 MIAA) was led by Aaron Washington's 28 points, including eight three-pointers, while Eric Ewing scored 21 points.
Alma trailed, 53-47, to the Comets at the half and was down by as many as 18 points in the opening frame. Late in the half, however, the Scots mounted a comeback, entering the break only down by six points. In the second half, Alma got within one point, trailing 85-84 with 3:27 remaining, but Olivet was able to score seven of the next nine points to take a 92-86 lead with 53 seconds left. The Scots tried to cut into the lead with fouls and three-point shooting, but Olivet went 8-for-10 from the line down the stretch to preserve the victory.
Alma will close out its three-game road trip and begin the second half of league play on Saturday, Jan. 28, traveling to Kalamazoo College. Earlier this season on January 4, the Scots recorded a 107-63 victory over the Hornets at Art Smith Arena. Tip off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
