Alma, Mich. - The Alma College wrestling team hosted the sixth annual Alma Open on Saturday (Jan. 21) at Art Smith Arena, with over 150 wrestlers from approximately 30 schools participating.
Senior Trent Hullett (Jackson, Mich./Parma Western) was the top performer at the event for Alma, finishing first in the 184 pound weight class. After receiving a bye in the first round, Hullett posted a 14-4 major decision win in the quarterfinals. In the semifinal round, Hullett recorded his lone pin of the day over Logan Beaudoin of Olivet College. Hullett rounded out his day winning the first place match against Michigan State's Nick May with a 3-2 decision.
Freshman Brendan Ladd (Ortonville, Mich./Brandon) also entered a solid performance, placing fourth overall at 133 pounds. After being pinned in the first round, Ladd came back and won two consolation rounds by decision and techincal fall, leading him to the third place match, where he fell by techincal fall to Michigan's Ben Lamantia.
The Alma College wrestling team will be back in action on Friday-Saturday, Jan. 27-28, when they will travel to Wheaton, Ill., to participate in the Pete Willson Invitational, hosted by Wheaton College.
