Box Score Alma, Mich. - The Alma College women's basketball closed out the home portion of the 2015-16 season on Saturday (Feb. 13) afternoon, posting a 58-52 win over Olivet College. The Scots improved to 9-13 overall and 4-10 in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association while finishing the year 7-4 at Art Smith Arena.
Junior Tara Padgett (Freeland, Mich./Freeland) came off the bench to lead the Scots with 17 points, while freshman Kassidy Blough (Jackson, Mich./East Jackson) netted 14 points as Alma finished the game making 44.2 percent of its shots from the floor. Olivet was led by Jillian Nickels, who scored 13 points, including 3-for-4 shooting from the three-point line, and T'Keyia Collins, who added 10. Sophomore Lauren Higgins (Sterling Heights, Mich./Cardinal Mooney Catholic) paced Alma defensively with a game-high nine rebounds.
Prior to the game, the program's five seniors - Kassidi Adams (Montrose, Mich./Montrose), Alexandra Barnwell (Stanton, Mich./Central Montcalm), Raeanna Zink (Frankenmuth, Mich./Frankenmuth), Alissa Clink (Hillman, Mich./Hillman) and Hannah Frapolly (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech) - were honored for their contributions to Alma College women's basketball over the past four seasons.
The Scots and Comets played even through the first 20 minutes of the game, going into the break tied at 25. Alma erased a four-point deficit in the final 37 seconds of the second quarter before opening the third stanza on a 10-0 run to take a 10-point lead halfway through the 3rd quarter. Alma ended the third up by nine at 44-32 before Olivet opened the final period with five straight points to cut the lead to four, but Alma responded, building a 10-point lead at 50-40 with 4:30 to play.
The Comets answered with a 9-0 run to pull within one at 50-49 with 1:50 to play, but the Scots were able to close out the game on the free throw line, making six of the eight attempts in the final 31 seconds to seal the victory.
Alma will play its final three games of the 2015-16 campaign on the road next week. On Monday, Feb 15, the Scots will visit Rochester College before traveling to Calvin College on Wednesday, Feb. 17. On Saturday, Feb. 20, Alma will close out the season at Trine University.
