Box Score Alma, Mich. - The Alma College women's basketball team dropped a 71-64 decision to visiting Calvin College on Wednesday (Dec. 7) evening in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association opener for the Scots. Senior Tara Padgett (Freeland, Mich./Freeland) and sophomore Sophie Guzman (Grand Ledge, Mich./Grand Ledge) each scored 14 points to lead the Scots (1-4 overall, 0-1 MIAA).
Sophomore Kelsey Wolffis (Muskegon, Mich./Mona Shores) contributed 12 points, making four of her six shots, and added a team-high seven rebounds and three blocks. She now has 77 blocks in her career, good for third on the program's all-time list. The Scots outshot the Knights, making 42.6 percent (26-61) of their shots from the floor but were out-rebounded by a 42-34 margin.
In the first quarter, the Scots jumped out to a six-point lead early on before the Knights rallied, taking a one-point advantage at 20-19 after the first 10 minutes. In the second frame, Alma and Calvin exchanged the lead seven times before the Scots gained a four-point lead after a three-pointer by Tara Padgett, who scored nine of Alma's final 11 points in the half. The Knights responded with a 13-2 run to lead 39-32 before Padgett hit back-to-back buckets to pull the Scots to within three at 39-36. Alma couldn't get any closer as Calvin entered the halftime break with a 41-38 lead.
In the 3rd quarter, Alma battled to tie the game at 47-47 and took the lead at 50-49 after a three-pointer by Guzman. The Knights responded with a 6-0 run and grabbed a 55-53 lead entering the 4th quarter. The final frame saw Calvin open up a seven-point lead and maintain long possessions, thwarting any attempt by Alma to close the gap.
The Scots return to Art Smith Arena on Saturday, Dec. 10, to host No. 7 Hope College. Tip off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
