Ada, Ohio - The Alma College wrestling team finished eighth out of 11 teams at the Ohio Northern Invitational, held on Saturday (Dec. 3) on the campus of Ohio Northern University.

Freshman Brendan Ladd (Ortonville, Mich./Brandon) and junior Taylor McPhail (Muskegon, Mich./Mona Shores) both posted runner-up finishes in their respective weight classes, with Ladd finishing second at 125 pounds while McPhail placed second in the 174-pound bracket.

Ladd, who entered the invitational with a 9-0 record, posted a pair of major decisions as well as an 8-5 decision over Tiffin University's Hunter Langeloh to get to the finals. In the championship match, Ladd was handed his first loss of the season, a 14-10 decision to Waynesburg University's Tristan Buxton.

McPhail, also 9-0 entering the weekend, posted a pair of falls and a major decision to get to the finals at 174 pounds. In the championship match, Justin Brown of Campbellsville University took the victory by a 7-5 margin for McPhail's first loss of the year.

Sophomore Jared Fleming (Williamston, Mich./Williamston) finished fifth at 157 pounds, while freshman Jake Anderson (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams took sixth at 141 pounds. Junior Aaron Parr-Besemer (Berkley, Mich./Berkley) also placed at the meet, finishing eighth in the 125 pound bracket.

"While we did not wrestle our best or accomplish our goal of winning the tournament, we had a number of guys that went out and competed," first-year Head Coach Jeremiah Tobias said. "We did not have any glaring mistakes but at the end of the day the little mistakes can add up and cost you some matches, which is what happened today."

The Scots return to the mat on Friday, Dec. 9, with a dual meet at Heidelberg University.
