Battle Creek, Mich. - The Alma College women's golf team is in fifth place after the first day of the Fall Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Championship, held at the Bedford Valley Country Club. The Scots combined for a score of 337 (+49) and sit eight strokes behind fourth-place Trine University (329).
Sophomore Tori Basso (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion) led Alma with a +7 79 to tie for sixth, while sophomore Hannah Joslin (Linden, Mich./Linden) finished in the top 20, tying for 18th with a score of 83 (+11).
Sophomore Kennedy Hilley (Lake Odessa, Mich./Lakewood) carded a +13 85, while freshman Jennifer Kowalczyk (Northville, Mich./Northville) and junior Katie Neiswender (Quincy, Ill./Notre Dame) shot 90 and 91 respectively.
Hope College leads the field with a +11 299 as a team, 24 strokes ahead of second-place Olivet College. Two Dutch golfers - Nicole Meyer and Britni Gielow - led the field with a +1 73 after 18 holes.
The Scots will wrap up the fall portion of their season on Saturday, Oct. 8, with the final 18 holes at Bedford Valley. Alma is 29 strokes out of fourth place with one round remaining in the fall league schedule. The top four teams qualify for the spring MIAA Championship, with the winner earning a berth in the NCAA Division III Golf Championships.
