Brewer takes fifth at 157 in Pete Willson Invitational

Wheaton, Ill. - The 17th-ranked Alma College wrestling team finished in 22nd place out of 32 teams at the prestigious Pete Willson Invitational, hosted by Wheaton College.

The Scots were without four of their top wrestlers, including seniors Trevor Maresh (Northville, Mich./Northville), ranked third at 285 pounds, and Jamie Jakes (Dearborn, Mich./Divine Child), who is sixth at 197 pounds.

The top finisher for Alma was senior Shawn Brewer (New Boston, Mich./Huron), who placed fifth in the 157-pound bracket with an overall record of 5-2. Brewer won his first two matches before falling to North Central's Josh Tardy, ranked eighth at 157, in the quarterfinal round. In the wrestle-backs, Brewer won two more matches before suffering a loss to Wheaton's Jered Fekete, the No. 7 wrestler at 157.

In the fifth-place match, a rematch with Tardy, Brewer was awarded the victory by medical forfeit.

The Scots return to Art Smith Arena for the final time in 2015-16 on Thursday, Feb., 4 to host Trine University at 7:00 p.m. The meet is senior night, with five wrestlers - Brewer, Jakes, Maresh, Caleb Huff, and JJ Sadler, being honored.
