Scots MBB traveled to Adrian College on Saturday afternoon and dropped 66-52 decison

Box Score

On Saturday afternoon, the Alma College Men's Basketball team hit the road for a MIAA contest against Adrian College. The Scots had a tough day shooting the ball and ultimately dropped a 66-52 decision to the Bulldogs, giving them a 2-4 league record and a 4-13 mark overall on the season. Adrian improved to 4-2 in the MIAA and 6-11 in 2014-15.

"We picked a bad time to have our worst shooting day of the year," said Alma Head Coach Sam Hargraves. "We don't have the post scoring options to be able to to withstand shooting this poorly. But, this will happen to a perimeter oriented team sometimes and we can't control that piece. But, what we can control is about half of our 19 turnovers, that is why we lost."

The first half was close throughout but low-scoring as tough defense on both sides made it difficult for their opponent to gain any rythym. The contest was tied four times in the first 11 minutes of the frame before Adrian finally was able to gain some traction, leading 24-18 at the 4:39 mark.

Alma made it a 27-24 game at 2:11 when Fr. F Doug Bradfield (Mason/Mason) made a lay-up, but Adrian would close out the half with the final four points, taking a 31-24 advantage into the break. The Scots never had a lead in the first 20 minutes and the final separation of seven was Adrian's largest lead of the frame.

The deciding minutes of the contest happened right out of the gate in the second half as Adrian scored the first 13 points of the frame to take a 40-24 lead with 14:11 remaining in the game. It would prove to be too much of a deficit for the Scots to overcome on this afternoon.

The Bulldogs extended their advantage to 21 at 53-32 at the 7:45 mark before the Scots began to chip away at the deficit. Alma scored the next seven points to make it a 53-39 game, the final points coming from a three-pointer by So. G Chase Fairchild (Rockford/Rockford) at 6:21.

However, the Scots would not be able to cut the lead to under 10 at any point the rest of game, with the closest being 11 at 60-49 after two free throws by Jr. F DJ Beckman (Shelby/Shelby) with 1:46 remaining. But, the Bulldogs were a determined bunch and closed out their victory over the last 90 seconds, walking off the court with the 14-point victory.

Fairchild was Alma's leading scorer with 14 points in the loss, while Jr. G Scott Nikodemski (Rockford/Rockford) finished with 11 and Fr. G Jason Beckman (Shelby/Shelby) had 10. Bradfield had 12 rebounds and a blocked shot in the loss, while Jason Beckman had a team-high four assists.

Up next for Alma is a home date with Kalamazoo College on Wednesday evening at Art Smith Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
