The Alma College Wrestling team welcomed 14 programs from around the country to the Art Smith Arena for its annual Alma Open event. Although this was not a team-scoring event, the Scots had some great individual performances on the afternoon en route to leading the tournament with 13 pins. Head Coach Todd Hibbs rested most his varsity wrestlers on Saturday, allowing his junior varsity squad to gain important experience on the mat.
"The young guys seized a tremendous opportunity today," said Hibbs. "These guys are the future of our program and everybody saw today how bright that future is ... I am very proud of these guys and their efforts today."
Sr. Collin Lesko (Tecumseh/Tecumseh) recorded the best finish for Alma on Saturday, winning three-straight matches to take second place at 125.
Freshmen came up huge for the Scots, with Daniel Sayfie (Grand Rapids/GRCC) and Travis Heller (Escanaba/Escanaba) both taking third place at 133 and 174, respectively. At 285, Cameron Lee (Lansing/Waverly) took fourth, while Tyler Eible (Clio/Clio) claimed fifth.
So. Trent Hullett (Jackson/Parma Western) claimed third at 174 and So. Collin Rankin (Redford/Union) also took third after recording three pins and tech fall at 184.
Alma varsity will be back in action on Jan. 30-31, heading to Illinois to take part in the Pete Wilson Invitational hosted by Wheaton College.
