Box Score The #16 ranked Calvin College Women's Basketball team came calling to Art Smith Arena on Saturday evening to take on the Scots and jumped out to a big early lead. The Knights rode that start to a 76-53 victory over Alma College in a game that saw the Scots fight to the finish.
With the loss, Alma is now 1-5 in the league and 6-9 overall this season, while the Knights improved to 12-0 in 2014-15 and 5-0 in the MIAA.
Unfortunately, this was one of those games that was basically decided early as Calvin jumped out to a 20-0 lead in the first 9:20 of the contest. The Scots finally got on the board at the 9:55 mark when So. F Morgan Seaberg (North Muskegon/North Muskegon) put in a jumper.
The Scots then outscored Calvin 21-19 the rest of the first half to cut the deficit to 39-23 after So. G Nicole Green (Portland/Portland) nailed a three-pointer with 20 seconds left in the frame. That 16-point deficit is what would face the Scots as they went into the halftime break.
The Knights however would take away any momentum that Alma had heading into the final 20 minutes by outscoring the Scots by a margin of 21-12 in the first 10 minutes, gaining an advantage of 26 at 51-35.
Calvin would eventually extend their lead to 31 points at the 3:55 mark before the hard-working Scots finished strong by outscoring the visitors 9-1 the rest of the way. However, it was too little, too late for Alma as they dropped a final decision of 76-53.
Sr. G Mallory Pruett (Ishpeming/Ishpeming) led the Scots with 14 points, including three from beyond the arc. Sr. G Grace Wheeler (St. Ignace/LaSalle) was next with 11 points and also added a team-high nine rebounds.
28 total turnovers and 38% shooting (18 of 48) from the field would doom the Scots on this afternoon, as they fell to a very talented Calvin squad.
Next up for Alma is a big game against Trine University next Saturday, January 17 at Art Smith Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
