The Alma College wrestling team traveled to Wabash College to participate in the Mid-States Championships on Saturday afternoon. Finishing with a team total 128.5, the Scots claimed second place in the six-team tournament.
The host Wabash College took first place on Saturday, tallying 170.0 team points. The Little Giants also claimed the two individual awards with Riley Lefever being named Outstanding Freshman and Josh Sampson taking home the Outstanding Wrestler title.
"I am really impressed with our young guys and how they performed today" said Alma Head Coach Todd Hibbs. "We rested eight of our 10 varsity starters and still managed a second place finish ... I am very happy about that."
Jr. Zac Case (Battle Creek/Pennfield) was dominant at 133 on Saturday, defeating the top-ranked wrestler in the weight class 5-3 to claim the title.
So. Shawn Brewer (New Boston/Huron) was the top seed at 157 and he certainly lived up to the ranking, claiming 7-1, 9-0 and 13-4 victories en route to capturing the title. Brewer faced a fellow Scot in the finals, Fr. Shane Cooper (Parma/Lumen Christ) came into the tournament unranked but battled through the bracket and advanced all the way to the final match.
Jr. James Carey (Ithaca/Ithaca) came into the tournament as the third seed at 149. The junior advanced to the semifinals where he fell 4-1. He did not let the loss slow him down however and Carey fought his way through wrestle-backs to claim third place in the weight class.
After falling in his first match at 174, So. Joshua Jensen (Cass City/Cass City) rebounded by winning the wrestle-back bracket to claim third.
Although unranked, Fr. Collin Rankin (Redford/Union) advanced to the finals of 184 where he fell to the top-seeded wrestler in the class by a fall. Fr. Cory Livingston (Otsego/Otsego) dominated the wrestle-back bracket to take third at 184.
In the three years since making its return, the Alma College wrestling team has tallied a first, second and fourth place finish at the Mid-States Championships.
