Alma Wrestling finishes 10th at the Pete Wilson Invitational over the weekend

The Alma College wrestling team participated in the Pete Wilson Invitational hosted by Wheaton College (Ill.) over the weekend. After finishing day one in ninth overall, the Scots wrapped up the weekend in tenth out of the 32 team field, improving seven spots from last year.

The Scots recorded three finishers at the event, which sets a school record for this tournament.

Alma featured two wrestlers that advanced to the championship match of their respective weight classes. Sr. Matt Tuttle (Reading/Reading), the third seed at 165, fell in heated final to top-seeded Cedric Gibson from UW-Whitewater, 7-6.

The suprise of the entire tournament was So. Jamie Jakes (Dearborn/Divine Child) at 174. Jakes came into the weekend as the seventh seed in the class but managed to defeat the third seed and the second seed on his way to the championship match. In a highly contested final match, Jakes lost a decision to top-seeded Dan Schiferl of UW-Oshkosh.

"Jamie was really the story of the weekend, not just of our team but the tournament in general," said Alma Head Coach Todd Hibbs. "He defeated the second seed yesterday who was ranked #6 in the country and he took down the three seed today, Gargano from Ohio Northern, who had previously beat Jamie twice this year."

After falling in his opening-round match, So. Trevor Maresh (Northville/Northville) fought through the wrestle-back bracket to claim the eighth spot at 197.

"Trevor had a solid performance today ... he fought through some injuries and adversity to put together a really strong performance and earn his first placing at the Pete Wilson Invitational."

The Scots hit the mat again at home for Senior Night on Friday, Feb. 2, taking on Trine at 7 p.m.
