Scots Women's Basketball notches first MIAA win with 62-55 triumph over Albion College

Box Score

The Alma College Women's Basketball team hosted Albion College on Saturday afternoon and came away with their first MIAA victory of the season with a 62-55 victory over the Britons at Art Smith Arena.

The win improved Alma's record to 3-4 overall and 1-2 in the MIAA, while Albion fell to 5-3 in 2014-15 and 1-2 in the league.

"Great conference win tonight," said Scots Head Coach Kris Johnson. "I am proud of how our team kept fighting and then executed in the closing minutes to secure our first league win of the season."

The Scots led the contest for most of the way, but Albion was always close and actually took a small lead in the second half. But, the Alma team was a determined bunch and eventually put away the pesky Britons.

Alma scored the first six points of the game and led 12-2 at the 14:32 mark of the first half when Sr. G Morgan Henry (Wayland/Wayland Union) hit a jumper. The Scots led 18-9 at 9:02 before a 7-0 Albion run made it a two-point contest with must 5:30 remaining in the first half.

But, the Scots responded with a 10-3 run and increased their lead to 28-19 on a three-point play by Jr. F Raeanna Zink (Birch Run/Frankenmuth) with 1:35 left in the half. However, the Britons hung tight and outscored the Scots 12-7 over the final 95 seconds as Alma took a 31-25 lead into the break.

The second half was an exchange of baskets throughout the first eight minutes and Alma still had a five-point advantage, 43-38, when Henry put in a lay-up with 11:16 left in the game. The Britons continued to chip away and eventually took their first lead of the contest at the 8:32 mark of the frame after two free throws.

The next six minutes were back and forth as the two teams were tied seven times and there were three more lead changes. Alma took the lead back at the 2:41 mark when Sr. G Grace Wheeler (St. Ignace/LaSalle) put in a lay-up for a 56-54 advantage.

The Scots would not relenquish the advantage as they finished the game with a 8-1 run. Wheeler hit another jumper, while Zink and Sr. G Mallory Pruett (Ishpeming/Ishpeming) each drained two free throws, giving Alma the final 62-55 margin of victory.

Zink led all Alma scorers with 21 points, while Wheeler and Pruett each finished with 10 in the victory. So. G Tara Padgett (Freeland/Freeland) and Wheeler paced the Scots with a team-high eight rebounds, while Padgett also added three assists.

The Scots resume action on Tuesday evening when they play a road game at Siena Heights University, beginning at 7:30 p.m.
